The three things Personify Finance really evaluates

Unlike a bank that may reject you solely on a credit-score cutoff, Personify Finance evaluates three overlapping factors — none of which is a single number:

1. Ability to repay

This is the biggest factor. Personify Finance wants to see that your monthly take-home income can comfortably cover the proposed loan payment on top of your existing rent, utilities, debt payments, and essential expenses. If the proposed payment pushes your debt-to-income ratio above program limits, you'll be declined — even with a reasonable credit score.

2. Credit history (not just the score)

Personify Finance pulls your credit report and looks at: recency of any delinquency, how many open accounts you have, how old your credit file is, and whether you've paid previous installment loans on time. A 620 FICO borrower with a clean recent 12 months looks very different from a 620 borrower with a 60-day delinquency in the last six weeks.

3. Banking behavior

Personify Finance may review patterns in the checking account you link for funding. Steady deposits, few overdrafts, and a consistent balance pattern support an approval. Frequent overdrafts, bounced payments, or very thin bank activity may count against you.

What you'll need to apply

Income sources Personify Finance accepts

Income doesn't have to come from a W-2 job. What matters is that it's steady, verifiable, and sufficient to cover the proposed payment.

Five things to do before you apply to Personify Finance

1. Pull your free credit reports

Go to AnnualCreditReport.com and pull all three reports (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion). Look for and dispute any errors — incorrect late payments, accounts that aren't yours, or paid-off accounts still showing a balance. Clean reports improve your Personify Finance offer.

2. Pay down existing revolving balances if you can

Credit utilization — the percentage of your credit limits you're using — is a major credit-score factor. If you can pay a credit card from 85% utilization down to 50% or lower before applying, you may see a measurable score bump within 30–60 days.

3. Avoid new credit applications for 30 days before applying

Multiple hard inquiries in a short window can lower your score and signal risk. Pause any other credit applications for 30 days before you check your Personify Finance rate.

4. Make sure your checking account is in good shape

If your checking account has multiple recent overdrafts, address that first. A clean 60-day banking window supports the "ability to repay" story.

5. Document your income clearly

Have a recent pay stub, benefits award letter, or 60 days of bank statements ready. For self-employed borrowers, have your most recent 1040 Schedule C and 60 days of business bank statements.

What to do if Personify Finance declines you

If you're declined, Personify Finance will send a federally required adverse action notice within 30 days explaining the main reasons for the decision. Common reasons and how to address them:

Reason givenWhat to do
Insufficient income to support paymentTry a smaller loan amount or longer term; add verified income sources
Debt-to-income too highPay down one or two revolving balances before reapplying
Recent delinquency on fileWait 6–12 months of on-time payments elsewhere before reapplying
Insufficient credit historyOpen a secured credit card or credit-builder loan and build history for 6 months
Unverifiable identity or incomeConfirm all info exactly matches your bank and government records

Realistic expectations

Personify Finance is more flexible than a bank — but not unlimited. If you have very recent severe credit events (bankruptcy within the last few months, active charge-offs, no income you can verify), Personify Finance will likely decline. That's actually the system working: a loan you can't afford doesn't help you, no matter how badly you need the funds today.
