What does it mean to refinance a Personify Finance loan?

Refinancing a Personify Finance loan means taking out a new loan — either from Personify Finance or from a different lender — and using the proceeds to pay off your existing Personify Finance balance. If the new loan has a lower APR, lower monthly payment, or shorter term that saves you money overall, refinancing can be a smart move.

Two ways to refinance

1. Refinance with Personify Finance directly

If you've been a Personify Finance borrower in good standing for several months, you may qualify for a refinance offer directly from Personify Finance. This typically happens when:

Check your Personify Finance borrower portal for a refinance offer, or contact customer service to ask whether you're eligible.

2. Refinance with a different lender

This is where the real savings usually are. After 6–12 months of on-time Personify Finance payments, your credit score has likely improved enough to qualify for a lower-APR loan from a prime or near-prime lender. Prequalify with Upstart, Upgrade, LendingPoint, your credit union, or a community bank — any of these may offer a materially better rate than your original Personify Finance loan.

When refinancing a Personify Finance loan makes sense

  1. Your credit score has improved by 30+ points since you took the original loan
  2. You can qualify for a sub-36% APR on the new loan
  3. The new loan's total of payments is less than what you'd pay to see your Personify Finance loan through to the end
  4. You have more than 12 months left on your Personify Finance loan (shorter remaining terms rarely benefit from refinancing)
  5. You can commit to continuing on-time payments on the new loan

When refinancing does NOT make sense

The refinance math

Compare total of payments, not just APR or monthly payment.

Worked example

Current Personify Finance loan: $3,000 originally at 95% APR, 36 months. 12 months in. Remaining balance ≈ $2,470 with ~24 months of payments remaining at $217/month. Remaining total ≈ $5,208.

Refinance offer: $2,470 personal loan at 29% APR, 24 months. Monthly payment ≈ $137. Total ≈ $3,288.

Savings: ~$1,920 over 24 months by refinancing. The lower monthly payment also frees up cash flow.

What to do before you refinance

  1. Pull your current credit score — most card issuers offer free scores. See where you stand.
  2. Request a payoff quote from Personify Finance (not just your current balance — the payoff quote includes exact per-day interest).
  3. Prequalify with 2–3 lower-APR lenders for the exact payoff amount. All should use soft pulls.
  4. Compare total of payments, including any origination fees, across every option.
  5. Confirm there's no prepayment penalty on the new loan (there isn't on Personify Finance either).
  6. Set up autopay on the new loan immediately after funding.

Credit score impact of refinancing

Refinancing involves one or more hard credit inquiries, which may temporarily lower your score by a few points. Over 2–3 months, as the new loan's on-time payment history begins reporting, that impact typically reverses. Pay off your Personify Finance loan with the new loan on the same day — don't let both accounts stay open with balances.

The "ladder up" strategy

Many borrowers use Personify Finance as the first rung of a credit-building ladder: a 12-month Personify Finance loan improves credit, qualifies them for a 29% APR LendingPoint loan a year later, which further improves credit, which qualifies them for a 12% APR credit union loan the following year. Each rung costs less than the one below it. Personify Finance isn't the destination — it's the start.
